Answers USCIS accepts
- It says America is free from British control.
- It says all people are created equal.
- It identifies inherent rights.
- It identifies individual freedoms.
Give any one of these answers at your interview.
The Declaration of Independence is important because it says America is free from British control and that all people are created equal.
What it means
Adopted on July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence announced that the 13 American colonies were no longer ruled by Great Britain.
It also stated big ideas that still guide the country: all people are created equal and have rights that come with being human (inherent rights), such as life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
This is one of the newer "why" questions on the 2025 test. Any one answer is enough; "It says all people are created equal" is easy to remember.
Memory tip: Two big messages: "We're free from Britain" and "All people are equal."
