Question 15 of 128 American Government

There are three branches of government. Why?

Answers USCIS accepts

  • So one part does not become too powerful
  • Checks and balances
  • Separation of powers

Give any one of these answers at your interview.

There are three branches so one part does not become too powerful. This is called checks and balances, or separation of powers.

What it means

Power is split between Congress (makes laws), the President (carries out laws) and the courts (explain laws). Each branch can limit the others.

For example, the President can veto a law, Congress can override a veto, and the courts can strike down a law that breaks the Constitution.

Memory tip: Three branches = checks and balances, so no one gets too powerful.
