Important Civil War events include Fort Sumter, the Emancipation Proclamation, Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Antietam, Sherman’s March and the surrender at Appomattox.

What it means

The war began at Fort Sumter in 1861. Gettysburg (1863) was a turning point, and the war ended with the Confederate surrender at Appomattox in 1865. Lincoln was assassinated days later.

Any one event is enough. “Gettysburg” or “Emancipation Proclamation” are easy to remember.

Memory tip: Civil War: begins at Fort Sumter, ends at Appomattox.
